Proposal
For my documented study, my wondering centers around how can a student explore identity through a fiber arts lesson. What is identity? This is one of the questions I will ask my students to think about and explore while they are creating their fiber art projects. We will look at some fiber artists who use their art to express their identity. Students will understand that by expressing their identity in their work they are creating meaningful art.
For the beginning activities students will explore and play with some of the possible uses of the fiber material. The experimental process is vital in designing with fiber and other materials as it is in working in other arts. The student’s learning activities will be planned to encourage them with teacher guidance, to do the problem-solving of their projects. How does the combination of color, pattern, and textile influence how each material can be handled. The students will experiment with the different ways of handling fiber including stitching, cutting, weaving, and sewing.

Grade 2 - experimental quilting square - Students will explore their identity by creating a quilting square from variety of fabric and making running stitches.

Grade 3 - wall hanging banner - Students will explore their identity by making a banner about their home or from their imagination using burlap, variety of stitches, and other embellishments.

Grade 4 - self-portrait pillow - Students will explore their identity through making a self-portrait pillow, using cotton fabric, markers, variety of stitches, and embellishments.

Grade 5 - personal geography map - Students will explore their identity through creating a personal geography map using fabric, stitches, other embellishments.
